J3 Coaches
Steve Diers
Steve is our most experienced coach having started (he jokes) in 1900. He has served many years on the National Ski Patrol and began coaching as a way of being with his own children when they became interested in racing. Eventually he served as head coach for the McIntyre Ski Team, the JIII and JII coach at Ragged, then back to McIntyre when his own children grew up and he wanted to stay closer to home where wife Joan raises Bernese Mountain dogs. In 2005/2006 Steve returned to Ragged where he can be seen skiing with his granddaughter Emily when not coaching. Steve is a USSA Level 200 Coach, FIS Referee Level 1, PSIA Level 1, ASEP certified, and a former member of National Ski Patrol. All three of his children were terrific racers and still love to cut a few turns with Dad.
Steve brings an enormous amount of knowledge to the mountain, inspiring racers to set goals and to achieve them. He recognizes the individualities of each of his protégés and relates to them in the way that works best for them. He's also lots of fun to ski with.
Hans Marquardt
Hans
has been in
love with skiing for 45 years, beginning in Switzerland on wooden skis
with
bear trap bindings, and eventually skiing on 4 continents in 9
countries. He’s
been a ski instructor and was captain of his high school ski team. He
loves to
ski fast and enjoys the bumps.
Hans
has proved that
the joy he derives from skiing is contagious, bringing smiles to the
faces of
all his athletes. His group is known for first tracks, short lunches
and
closing down the lifts at day’s end. When race season is
over, count on Hans to
lead a group expedition up Mt. Washington for a great ski adventure. He
“caught” his ski fever from his father who still
races the senior circuit in
Chile where Hans, wife Bunny and their two children – Ingrid
(JIII) and John
(JIV) – occasionally join Grandpa for a summer ski trip.
